It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear founding member Nancy Boulton.
Nancy had the vision that Harsens Island was deserving of its own Historical Society and Museum. She spent months promoting the idea and rounded up plenty of folks who agreed with her. In 2010 the original Board of Directors was formed during a meeting at the Reader’s Cove and Nancy’s vision began to take shape. After arranging to rent the old fire house, the Society had its home and Nancy had her museum.
Nancy served as Museum Director from its inception to the day of her passing. Most of Nancy’s life in the last few years was dedicated to Museum. Nancy spent countless hours at the museum. She spent most of her weekends either at the museum or trying to find volunteers to keep it open to the public.
Thank you, Nancy, for your leadership and your dedication to the Island and its heritage. You will be greatly missed.
On December 11, 2017, we lost our dear friend and one of our founders.
Gary Grout was a genealogist and Harsens Island Historian. Gary provided a great service to The Harsens Island St. Clair Flats Society as a founding member, Chairman of the Board, and President. His family history here was traced to the early 19th century.
Gary served in the U.S. Naval Reserve; he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, the General Society for the War of 1812, and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.
